The summer of 2022 is over quickly – especially after two years of constant normality. So while we’re excited to finally be able to book hot vacations, enjoy summer events, and work from the office, we’re also a little daunted at the prospect of dressing for them.
Luckily, Oonagh Brennan, Red’s fashion director, is on hand with her guide to nailing summer fashion in the city. So if you’ve been debating whether to choose another resort or something more sensible that you’re sure to wear again, now is the time to take the plunge…
When it’s hot in the city, I grab chic monochromatic outfits and chic accessories. I’m loving this season’s new architectural tops – my current favorite is a one-shoulder style paired with an A-line midi. It feels modern and minimalist, but is still summery.
Lace is making a small comeback this season, but the key to keeping it chic is a boho aesthetic. The easiest way to do this is with guipure lace or anything woven from cotton and by sticking to natural tones.
Speaking of above, if you don’t want to invest in a whole new outfit, pair your new purchase with any black jersey design – bandeaus, bardot styles, and anything with spaghetti straps will do, as long as the neckline is sharp!
Barely there strappy sandals (choose a low heel for practical points) add shine to the look, while a woven tote bag keeps the look feeling summery. Bold hues and a chunky chain are the finishing touches.
A one-shoulder top shows just enough skin to be subtly sexy and looks great with jeans, fitted pants, or maxi skirts. Mint Velvet’s design is made from comfortable jersey, which is always a plus.
Show off your shoulders and cleavage with summer’s bold necklines and set them apart with a chunky gold chain or pendant. Try layering a few necklaces on top of each other for maximum impact.
I love Farm Rio’s fresh take on lace. Instead of feeling fussy and formal, this A-line midi skirt has a relaxed, Ibiza-inspired feel thanks to its cotton giupure fabric and off-white hue. Add the matching top to your net-a-porter basket for three looks for the price of one.
This summer’s new sandal has barely-there straps and a low “walk-on” heel. The minimalist design of this bargain pair from H&M highlights the midaxi length of the skirt – for an elegant ankle flash.
The black accents that run through Jigsaw’s woven tote feel more urban than natural-toned raffia beach bags. This accessory also looks good in winter with dark denim, leather and corduroy.
Cat eye sunglasses pair perfectly with strong, sharp necklines and bring a modern, clean finish to tailoring. These are the “it” colors of summer, but they look just as cool with a smart navy Crombie coat and black leather trousers in winter.
If you can’t quite stretch for Saint Laurent’s edgy style, I also love Le Spec’s £55 oversized cat-eye shades. They’re high quality for such an affordable price – Meghan Markle is a fan too.
